Are you mad at me? I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be away so long.

It’s just that I’ve been really caught up launching the International Girl Gang Underground compilation zine, co-edited by Kate Wadkins. It’s been a frigging dream come true! I’m really proud of it, and I’ve been putting a majority of my extracurricular energy into the debut and into plotting next moves.

Fantastic writers and artists like OSA ATOE (Shotgun Seamstress), HADASS BEN-ARI (Fallopian Falafel – אשת חיל), CARLA DUARTE (Histérica), BILLY CHEER (This is Fag City), KATIE CRUTCHFIELD (P.S. Eliot, Bad Banana), LO (HEARTSREVOLUTION), and MIMI THI NGUYEN (Evolution of a Race Riot, Punk Planet) contributed. We’ve seen interest and support from folks all over the globe (even Kathleen Hanna). And there’s talk of expanding the scope to make IGGU zine into a global diy feminisms empire. (Kidding–Sort of.)

So, I hope you’ll forgive me that I’ve been a bit distracted.

I also hope you’ll visit girlgangunderground.org to keep up with developments, and maybe even to buy the zine. (We’ll be releasing the zine in a digital edition soon, but you should get your paws on the print copy ASAP.) There’s also the ability to add to our Directory, and we’re still soliciting folks to review bands (hint hint).

Teenage Cool Kids

First up: Teenage Cool Kids! Wait, did you hear that? It sounded like the collective “DUH!” of a thousand indie music bloggers. I guess that as per usual I’m tardy to the party. Oh, well. If you didn’t already do this a year ago, you can download their demo at DFW DIY.

Solanin

Next up: Solanin! Amy Klein of Titus Andronicus wrote me a few weeks ago to share this short, beautiful digital EP, For the Sky, from her solo project, Solanin. It’s quiet and thoughtful; has been compared to Joanna Newsom and Neutral Milk Hotel in terms of scope and sonic epicness. And yet, it’s only about 20 minutes long. You can download it at Solanin’s Bandcamp site.

Lava Lava

Finally: Lava Lava! A now-defunct DC twee/”cuddlecore” duo featuring Amina Althea (better known today as Amina Baird of Layers/Quake) and Spoonboy (of The Max Levine Ensemble). I can’t explain how the acoustic/pop-punk/acapella/drum machine mess that comprises the bulk of their two longest releases, Hey Fragile and Tour Demo, makes such magic in my brain when I listen to it. If I could, I’d definitely rip off their formula and team up with Santi Gold and make a bajillion dollars writing adorable hits for Miley Cyrus or some crap. I think it goes without saying that if you were to look at the “Play Count” on my iTunes for this band, it would read: “∞”. My point? Go download them both: Hey Fragile and Tour Demo. Oh, and to be clear: while my Google-stalking of Spoonboy’s sexuality is inconclusive, Ms. Amina is a BFD/Q. So, there you have it.

Your sig-other is going to be pissed when you tell them that your previous Valentine’s Day plans are canceled, now that you’ve found out about the Anti V-day Riot Grrrl Cover Band show that’s happening this Sunday, Feb. 14th at the Loft (1087 Broadway) in New York City. Win them back instantly by inviting them to be your date and buying them a Carnal Knowledge tape (or a rad feminist zine, or one of the fantastic FTB compilation CDs) at the For The Birds table.

Word on the street has it that The Homewreckers will be performing as The Muffs and other NYC scenesters will take the roles of bands such as The Breeders, The Gits, Bikini Kill, and more. ALL FOR $5-$10, PEOPLE. This promises to be a rad time. I expect to see lots of pictures and video–report back and leave a link in the comments to your writeups!

Little Lungs – Atlantic Bridge from If You Make It on Vimeo.

Little Lungs–the Brooklyn-based band led by Angie Boylan of Each Others Mothers, Cheeky (RIP), and an as-yet-untitled new project with Kate Wadkins–kicks off their nation-wide tour in the last days of January. They’ll hit an impressive amount of cities as they cross the States, playing 19 shows in 17 days before they head off to Australia to tour even more. Check their Myspace for details, and the (friggin’ awesome!) new song “Estranged” from the upcoming Living Hell 7″.
